Bishkek is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan. Bishkek is also the administrative centre of the Chüy Region. Bishkek is situated at an altitude of about 800 metres (2,600 ft), just off the northern fringe of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range, an extension of the Tian Shan mountain range. Bishkek is a city of wide boulevards and marble-faced public buildings combined with numerous Soviet-style apartment blocks surrounding interior courtyards.
There are also thousands of smaller, privately built houses, mostly outside the city centre. Streets follow a grid pattern, with most flanked on both sides by narrow irrigation channels, watering innumerable trees to provide shade in the hot summers.
Ala Archa Tien Shan spruces
Ala Archa gorge. 35 km from Bishkek there is one the most visited national parks of Kyrgyzstan – Ala-Archa. There, in the territory of 20,000 ha, a variety of coniferous woods and spruce forest interstices with rivers and mountain scene appeal to the eye of the travelers.
Height above sea level: 1600-4860 m.
Hiking. It is a popular outdoor picnic spot for hikers, horse riders, climbers and skiers. There are more than 20 glaciers in the park, two small rivers that come from their melting and 50 mountain peaks.
Ala-Archa presents both flora, including Tien Shan spruces, Semyonov firs, Kolpakovsky and Kaufman tulips and rare alpine edelweiss flowers; and fauna: eagles, mountain goats, Marco Polo rams, and rare but well-known snow leopards. Here you will enjoy the smell of real juniper.
